05/15/11Two California State Titles and eight podium appearances at the NICA State Championship MTB Race in Los Olivos this weekend punctuated the Whole Athlete-Specialized Team Juniors' success throughout the 2011 High School season. Sophomores Lucas Newcomb (Drake High School) and Josie Nordrum (Redwood High School) each took their respective Junior Varsity State Titles after sweeping the entire NorCal series. "Mr. Consistency" Jonny Kaufman (San Rafael High School) earned a well-deserved 2nd place behind Newcomb in JV, while Taylor Smith (Marin Catholic High School) had his best ride of the Spring to take 2nd in an extremely competitive Varsity field. Max Houtzager (Redwood High School) also landed on the Varsity podium with a solid 4th place. On the Varsity Girls side, Sofia Hamilton (Drake High School), Kate Courtney (Branson High School) and Mackinzie Stanley (Drake High School) rounded out the super-competitive ladies' podium with 3rd, 4th and 5th places respectively. In the six NorCal and State High School races this season, Whole Athlete-Specialized juniors earned 15 wins and 46 podium placings! |

04/03/11John Bennett (Cal Giant-Specialized) wins Stage 1 of the Redlands Stage Race and finishes the final stage with the climber's jersey. Stage 1 saw Bennett part of a day-long breakaway, outsprinting the remaining members of the break just in front of a charging field to take the stage and sprinter's jersey. The impressive victory marks his first NRC win of the season and of a promising career. After losing the sprinter's jersey in the Stage 2 criterium, Bennett wen't on the attack in the Stage 3 Sunset Loop to take the KOM competition. |

03/27/11Nick Newcomb (Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team) takes the overall win in the Cat 3 San Dimas Stage Race, after setting the fastest time in the Stage 1 time trial. The team (Alec Kassin, Cody Tapley & Kick Kinney) worked tirelessly to defend the leader's jersey throughout the second and third stages against constant attacks from their GC competition. It was truly a team success as they displayed an impressive degree of dedication and cohesion. |

03/06/11A graduate of the Whole Athlete Development Team Program, John Bennett (Cal Giant-Specialized) wins the U25 Merco Cycling Classic Stage Race. In only his second year road racing at the national level, Bennett faced a strong pro field with Bissel, Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth, Jelly Belly and other top performers. The Stage 1 Road Race saw Bennett the only remaining non-Bissel in a six-man breakaway by the end of the stage. He finished a strong 4th, taking the U25 leader's jersey. In the Stage 2 Time Trial Bennett faced some stiff competition. He once again took the top U25 honors, less than a minute back from stage winner Jeremy Vennell (Bissell). Next was the Stage 3 Criterium and Bennett rode the Bissell train with patience and intelligence, defending his U25 lead while taking a top-10 finish on the stage. The Stage 4 Road Race was the final test, and Bennett passed with flying colors, wnining the U25 overall and finishing no lower than 12th place on any of the four stages. |

03/05/11Tony Smith (Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team) took the victory in the Pro Open Division at the Lake Sonoma MTB cross country race. The team went 1-2 in the race, with director Dario Fredrick taking 2nd place. In his final season as a junior, Smith is targeting both national events and world cups with the goal of once again representing the US at the MTB World Championships. Meanwhile, in the Expert Open Division, Taylor Smith and Bobby Zidek went 1-2 as well, representing the team on the top two podium steps. |

02/28/11Keegan Swenson (Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team) starts out his 2011 season with a win at the SageBrush Safari Junior Cat 1 MTB cross country race. Teammate and U23 rider Zach Valdez claimed a strong 4th place in his first-ever pro race. Riders faced muddy, cold conditions, which included an icy, waist-high creek crossing each lap. |

02/28/11Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team riders represented well at the NorCal High School League Prologue race at Granite Bay. Three wins and multiple podium and top-10 finishes showed that the team's winter training is already paying off. Max Houtzager and Taylor Smith went 1-2 in Varisty, with Bobby Zidek taking 4th and Sven Beer 10th. In Junior Varsity, Lucas Newcomb and Jonny Kaufman also went 1-2, while Josie Nordrum took the win in the JV Girls. The Varsity girls took 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th with Kate Courtney, Victoria Yoham, Mackinzie Stanley and Sofia Hamilton (despite a 1st lap crash & mechanical). Great job, everyone! |

Alec Kassin started the momentum with a win in the Cat 3 Cantua Creek Road Race on Sat, while Nick Newcomb quickly followed suit on Sunday with the victory in the Pine Flat Road Race. Meanwhile on the dirt, Riley Predum won the TBF Challenge XC in his first race as a U23 Pro. |

True to the company's holistic philosophy, the team not only enjoyed road and mountain bike riding on the bucolic back roads and scenic slopes of the famed Mt. Tamapais, but also practiced yoga each day, were treated to organic meals and participated in an array of presentations and workshops from sponsors, docs and supporters.
